Looking for an AI Dungeon alternative? What NovelFarer does differently

You discovered AI storytelling and loved it. Type anything and the story follows: no menus, no fixed paths. AI Dungeon showed many people what that feels like, and a whole genre has grown around the idea since.
But after a while you started to notice things. The story drifted. Characters forgot what happened. You spent more time correcting the AI than playing. And everything you tried just worked.
Freedom is wonderful. Freedom with nothing pushing back gets old.
Not all AI story games are the same game
Some apps lean almost entirely on the AI: complete freedom, but nothing the story is held to. Others put structure underneath, so the world stays consistent and your choices carry weight. NovelFarer is firmly in the second group. If that is what you have been missing, here is what it means in practice.
A rules engine that keeps the world true
In NovelFarer the AI writes, but code keeps count. Your health, money, belongings, the time, where you are and who trusts you are tracked by a game system, not remembered by a language model. If you sold your lantern two scenes ago, you do not suddenly have it in the cave.
Dice you throw yourself
When something is risky, you see the number you need and what you could lose before anything happens. Then you throw the d20 and add one of your four attributes and whatever the scene gives you, against 9, 12 or 15. You can succeed, fail, or succeed at a price. More on the dice.
A world with edges
The map grows as you explore, travel costs time, and every area has a fixed danger level: calm, dangerous or deadly. Enemies do not grow with your level, so getting stronger means something. Mysteries come with a case file, clues and exactly one accusation. Read about the mystery game.

Novel prose, not chat
Scenes are written like a book: description in prose, dialogue as dialogue. Every story has a goal and a threat on its way, so there is always somewhere to go and something to run from.
How to switch
- Pick a worldStart from one of the ready-made worlds, or describe your own in one sentence.
- Create your characterChoose one of five roles, each with its own strengths, and write your own past.
- Type what you doThe storyteller writes the scene. When it gets risky you throw the die, and the game keeps count of what it costs you.
What NovelFarer is not
To be fair to you: NovelFarer is a single-player game. There is no multiplayer, no voice and no companion system. Your character cannot die; you collapse and pay a price instead. And it is a 16+ game where romance is possible but never explicit. If you are looking for any of those, it is not the right fit, and that is fine.
